March 29 marks five years since the first marriage of a same-sex couple in the UK. The Same Sex Couples Act 2013 divided parliament, but was officially passed in Britain in 2014 with gay couples permitted to wed for the first time. A number of gay couples vyed to claim the title of being the first to be married in Britain by trying to time it perfectly so their vows were said just seconds after the clock struck midnight. The Netherlands had become the first country to allow same-sex marriage in 2001, with countries such as Belgium, Canada and Spain following suit. To mark the occasion we take a look at a year of statistics on same-sex relationships.
