Dietary supplements: Nutrition in a pill or wasted money?

There are a countless number of dietary supplements on the market and for many, popping a pill or two after breakfast is an everyday morning routine. Products that were once exclusive to specialist health stores are now available in supermarkets across the country and online. As accessibility has grown, so have the number of people consuming vitamins and supplements – leading to an increase in sales. A study into the UK vitamins and supplements market by Mintel saw that the industry was worth £414 million in 2015, with 65% of all adults taking some form of vitamin or supplement on a daily basis. But with so many products on the market it’s hard for consumers to know whether claims made by supplement companies are actually supported by solid evidence and if so, which are the best to opt for.
